Lebensraum Rhön -
A Biosphere Reserve of Unesco

Thanks to reunification the Rhön which spans the border triangle of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia again became the middle of Germany.

In March 1991 UNESCO recognised the Rhön as a biosphere reserve in order to ensure the protection, the maintenance and the development of this extraordinary mountain landscape. The Rhön is thus in the world-wide network of currently 411 biosphere reserves in more than 90 countries of the world which UNESCO is building up as a world organisation for education, science and culture within the framework of its programme “Man and the biosphere” (MAB).
In Germany 14 areas have so far been recognised as biosphere reserves. In an exemplary manner the development and implementation of lasting forms of utilisation compatible with the environment are made evident. Biosphere reserves also serve research of the environment, ecological observation of the environment and formation of the environment.

Man and nature belong together

In biosphere reserves it is a question of the interaction of man and the environment. And it is a question of man`s responsibility in the way he treats nature. Together with the people living and working here concepts for the protection, maintenance and development of the Rhön are worked out and implemented. These are related to all fields of human activity, e.g.. agriculture and forestry, water economy, tourism and recuperation, housing, economics and traffic. The fields of research, ecological observation of the environment and formation of the environment make a significant contribution here.

The Rhön - Region of the future

For innovative projects for the creation of a lasting development and for the exemplary joint working of three federal states for biosphere reserves the biosphere reserve Rhön was awarded the distinction "region of the future" in the year 2000.

Milseburg – The volcanic hill "Pearl of the Rhön", was sacred, especially for the Celts.
